Phyllostachys - nidularia, Large Noded Bamboo

A beautiful unusual bamboo which grows about 33 feet in height with diameters to 2 inches. Older culms have very distinctive large nodes, some resembling the swelling at the top of a coke bottle. Culms may develop some random spotting with age. Leaves are rather broad and light green in color. Nidularia produces shoots which are among the best for flavor.

Phyllostachys - nigra, Black Bamboo
|
Rare and beautiful. Writers have called it the "Jewel of the Bamboos." Nigra has jet black culms and brillant green leaves. It forms a small open grove and is beautiful in gardens. Black bamboo is used in making fine furniture in Japan. At sprouting time P. nigra's new culms are green but later turn black. There have been over a dozen different P. nigra introuductions made into the United States. Some of these black bamboos grow taller than others, turn black sooner, and get a little blacker than others. The location and exposure in which the bamboo is grown has been observed to influence some of these characteristics. Black Bamboo has grown to 25 feet and 1 ¼ inches in diameter. Cold hardy to 5° F.

A rare member of the black bamboo family. Grows to 45 feet reaching 3 inches in diameter. young culms are green, gradually developing brown and purple spots with age. Bory sometimes develops a beautiful snakeskin pattern with touches of brown, purple, and pink when exposed to intense sunlight. Unusually cold hardy to 0° F.

Big brother to the black bamboo. Probably the most vigorous grower of the giant hardy bamboos. Grows to 60 feet and reaches 4 ½ inches in diameter. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of the giant bamboos. Culms are covered with a beautiful light-gray wax coating and bend gracefully with masses of dark green leaves. The Culms are thin walled, but the wood is very good. Cold hardy to 0° F.

This attractive dark green bamboo is reputed to be the most cold hardy of the genus, toleration -20° F. This native of Tang-si, Chekiang Province, China grows to 34 feet in height and 2 inches in diameter. A good bamboo for windbreaks.

Phyllostachys - rubromarginata, Red Margined Bamboo

A rare bamboo not widely grown outside of the plant introduction stations. Rubromarginata is a very prolific producer of culms according to tests run at Auburn, Alabama. It was the most productive species tested. The culms grow to 31 feet in height and 1 ¼ inches in diameter. Its long slender culms make good windbreaks and screens. Good for reclaiming marginal land. Culms gradually become coated with wax. Then gray to yellow-gray in color with age. Cold hardy to 0° F.
